Submission Preparation Checklist

Please review the Atla Open Press House Style Guidelines prior to completing your submission.

Authors are required to comply with the following items or their submission may be returned.
This submission:

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • Has not been published and is not under consideration at any other publication.
    • Note: prior conference presentation or posting of drafts on a site dedicated for open peer review is not considered ‘publication’ for these purposes
  • Is in Microsoft Word (DOCX), Open/Libre Office (ODT), or rich text (RTF) format.
  • Uses only Unicode fonts only.
  • Includes a byline consisting of the name, position, and institution for each contributing author.
  • Image formats comply with the Atla Open Press Visual Materials Guidelines.
  • Filenames
    • Use the first few words of the article title
      Example: The title “The Future of Theological Libraries” would be Future_of_Theological_Libraries.docx
    • Include material type and a number for supporting files
      Example: FutureTheologicalLibraries_Image3.png
  • Conflicts of Interest have been declared.
  • Conforms to Chicago Manual of Style in-text author-date format for citations.
    • Endnotes are only included for commentary or other ancillary, discursive, or explanatory content.
  • Any AI generated content has been disclosed to the editor in submission comments according to the Atla Open Press AI policy.

Author Guidelines

Perspectives & Practices

Perspectives & Practices is a collection of first-person narratives that incorporate an experience, process, project, or trend report related to an aspect of technical services.

Potential topics include:

  • acquisitions
  • cataloging and metadata
  • serials and electronic resources (including open access resources)
  • collection management
  • digital archives
  • leadership and management in technical services

Authors may describe a project with a particular challenge, provide a first-hand account of a conference or training session, outline a process followed in their work, or report on a trend in the field of technical services.  

The text should be engaging and personal while remaining professional. This is not a scholarly article and does not need an abstract or bibliography. If citations are used, however, we ask that you comply with the Chicago Manual of Style author-date format. Authors are encouraged to include links or references for further reading and exploration of the topics they engage in. Submissions should fall between 1000 and 2500 words; conference or training write-ups and trend reports may be fewer than 1000 words. Submissions should not have been previously published.

Reviews

Brief reviews of 200-500 words on open source and proprietary software, library management systems, and other tools and resources implemented and utilized to support acquiring, maintaining, and providing access to information resources. Reviews should address available features and tested applications as well as potential drawbacks or missing functionalities. 

Deadlines

Unsolicited submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. However, for consideration for a particular issue, please submit by the following dates:

January issue – by Sept. 1

April issue – by Dec. 1

August issue – by Apr. 1

October issue – by June 1

Submission Instructions

To submit a manuscript: 

  1. Register and log into our Open Journal Systems (OJS) submission system.

  2. On the Submissions page click “Make a New Submission” in the blue box.

  3. In the Submission form that opens:
    1. select the type of submission you are making from the "Section" dropdown
    2. review and acknowledge the submission checklist
    3. upload your files
    4. add details about your submission

NOTE:

  • If there are multiple authors, only one needs to complete the submission process.

Atla Open Press is committed to a peer-reviewed open access publication model without article processing charges, article submission charges, or other author fees.
