Abstract

Indigenization in Christian missions emphasizes the need for churches to become self-governing, self-financed, and self-propagating, without reliance on foreign resources or control. This concept, rooted in the Protestant "Three-Self" formula, aims to foster local leadership and sustainability. The article traces historical proponents of indigenization, such as William Carey and Roland Allen, and examines the biblical basis for indigenous church development through the Apostle Paul’s missionary work. Indigenization is distinguished from contextualization and is presented as essential for church health and gospel expansion, ultimately advocating for missionaries to empower local believers and phase out foreign dependency.
